The Member of Parliament for Effia, Isaac Boamah Nyarko, has opposed the proposed 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill, 2025, arguing that the creation of a new authority to oversee the policy is unnecessary and will lead to duplication of functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to him, the establishment of a 24-hour economy authority would replicate the responsibilities of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Agribusiness, resulting in avoidable financial costs to the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Contributing to the debate on the bill in Parliament on Wednesday, February 5, 2026, Mr Boamah Nyarko insisted that the 24-hour economy policy could be implemented effectively without the need for a new authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEstablishing authorities is not just for the implementation of one policy statement. Authorities are supposed to be created to run specific programmes or agendas over a long period of time. So the question is, what exactly is this authority supposed to do?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He maintained that existing state institutions are capable of coordinating and driving the policy without the creation of an additional bureaucratic structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central and Chairman of Parliament\u2019s Finance Committee, Isaac Adongo, defended the bill, saying the authority is necessary to ensure proper coordination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He explained that the 24-hour economy policy cuts across multiple sectors and therefore requires a dedicated body to harmonise the activities of various agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTo undertake a policy that is inter-sectoral, you need a coordinating mechanism to ensure that all the agencies involved work together effectively. That is what this authority is going to do,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
